For Everyone

Managing Your Income Sources

What this is

The income sources page shows all the businesses and income sources registered with HMRC under Making Tax Digital. These are the sources you file quarterly updates for - self-employment businesses, UK property lettings, and foreign property lettings.

If you’re an accountant

The sidebar shows this page as “Income Sources”. It displays the income sources for the client you currently have selected. Use the client selector to switch between clients.

If you’re filing for yourself

The sidebar shows this page as “My Businesses”. It displays your own registered businesses and income sources.

What you see on screen

The page at /app/businesses shows:

  • A card for each income source displaying:
    • Business or income type icon (self-employment, UK property, or foreign property)
    • Trading name (for self-employment) or income type label
    • Business type classification
    • Business ID from HMRC
  • A “Refresh from HMRC” button to sync the latest data from HMRC
  • Last synced timestamp showing when the data was last refreshed

How to manage your income sources

View your sources

Your income sources are displayed as cards in a grid layout. Each card shows the key details for that income source.

Refresh from HMRC

Click Refresh from HMRC to pull the latest business data from HMRC. This is useful if you have recently registered a new income source with HMRC and it does not yet appear in Aligned.

View business details

Click on any income source card to see its full details, including address, accounting period, and more.

Things to know

  • Income sources are registered with HMRC, not created in Aligned. Aligned shows what HMRC has on record. If a source is missing, check your HMRC registration.
  • The three income types are: self-employment, UK property, and foreign property. Each has its own HMRC fields and quarterly reporting requirements.
  • Refreshing syncs with HMRC. The data shown comes from HMRC’s records. Use the refresh button to ensure you are seeing the latest information.
